Located in the province of Lucca, 50 kilometers to the north, the valley is crossed lengthwise by Regional Road 445 of the Garfagnana, which connects State Road 12 of the Abetone and Brennero to the entrance of the A15 Parma-La Spezia motorway, at the Aulla exit (49 km from Castelnuovo).
Other access routes include: to the west, the Cipollaio tunnel on the Provincial Road of Arni, which connects to Versilia (50 km from Forte dei Marmi), and to the east, the Pradarena Pass (130 km from Reggio Emilia) and the Radici Pass (Provincial Road 72, 125 km from Modena).
Fairly well served by public transport, it can be reached by bus from Lucca and is crossed by the Lucca-Aulla railway line. Local buses connect Castelnuovo to the various towns of the Garfagnana.

By Car
The valley is crossed lengthwise by Regional Road 445 “della Garfagnana”, which connects it to the south with the motorway entrances at Altopascio and Lucca (A11 Firenze-Mare), and to the north with Aulla and the A15 motorway (Parma-La Spezia).
Other access routes include: to the west, the Cipollaio tunnel on the provincial road of Arni, which connects to Versilia, or the Monte Pelato tunnel (Vestito Pass), which leads from Arni to Massa.
To the east, the Pradarena Pass connects to Reggio Emilia, while the Radici Pass leads to Modena.
From Bagni di Lucca, the Porretana state road connects to Bologna (with access to the A1 motorway at Sasso Marconi).
